DIY Rustic Wedding Ideas

Beautiful rustic homespun DIY weddings really pull on my sentimental heartstrings. All the textures, nature inspired décor, patterns, ethereal neutrals, warm woody tones, mason jars and creative character makes rustic weddings oh so romantic. I was so excited to see the wedding set up come together for this TODAY show segment, who doesn’t love a wedding! The amazing team at Grain & Co, Hanako Floral Designs and Timbermill Designs helped the vision all come together during the few hours setting up, thank you so so much team, you are AMAZING. There are lots of other wonderful vendors involved, read on to learn more about them!

An important part of organising a DIY wedding, especially if you are on a budget is to pick a focal point as your show stopping stand out. By injecting your time and budget into making one area stunning is better than diluting your budget across little areas all over your ceremony or reception. This might be your archway or dessert table or wedding table. I decided on an archway as a feature for the TODAY show. This ‘Marry Me’ archway is a classic hardwood timber piece from Timbermill Designs. The simplistic design and beautifully handcrafted nature of this arbour compliments any wedding setting. The ‘Marry Me’ archway comes flat packed in three pieces and is designed to be easily assembled. The archway really shines with the giant LOVE sign at the front, these light up signs are so fun for a rustic wedding. Thanks to the lovely Melissa from Oak & Linden, a fabulous wedding stylist. You can hire this sign and many other pretty wedding items from Melissa and the team.

The talented Hanako from Hanako Floral Designs accented the archway with exquisite flowers. Hanako also styled the flowers for the main dessert table, see some of her other work below!
There are tutorials on how to create flower arches on youtube if you want to have a go yourself, here is a simple one to check out, click here.

My favourite little beauties at the moment are the exquisite vases by the amazing Helen from Lovestar. They are not really in the rustic style, more modern and playful, but are such a great DIY idea for a wedding I couldn’t resist! Helen, along with her husband’s and father-in-law’s savour-faire, make each piece using good old fashioned craftsmanship – “we cut, mould and weld each vase by hand. A lot of love goes into each piece. From conception to finished product, everything is done in-house”. The vases are so simple in style, but are truly beautiful. What I love most is that you only need a few stems of any style of flower and they look perfect. Great vase for the DIY bride and they come in so many pretty colours.

Flower crowns are also perfect for the bohemian, vintage or rustic wedding and offer a gorgeous alternative to a traditional veil. I just love the pretty crown that my friend Cheryl from Rosehip Flowers made me for the show. These sweet bloom crowns can be a fun DIY project too, but if they are going to be made with fresh flowers (which I prefer), you will need to make them the afternoon before at the earliest. They have been around since the Roman Empire, and we’re still enjoying their sweet style! Click here and here for some tutorials.

One of the more expensive elements of a wedding is the CAKE! Life’s too short, eat dessert first as I always say, but you don’t have to be broke to do it! A fab DIY cake option is the “Naked” cake – they are all the rage! These unfrosted beauties come in all shapes, sizes, and flavours. I love to top mine with lush flowers and the amazing GRAIN & CO custom topper then elevate them on natural wooden risers.

The good news is, you can buy the actual cake pre-made so all you need to do is decorate it. Mondo Naked Cakes supplied the naked cakes on the segment, they specialise in wholesale cakes for the industry and the public and they are YUMMY. They also sell the icing too, so if you are really not great in the kitchen but love the styling and creative side, then this is your answer. And think of all the money you will save! If you mention SUGAR COATED MAMA or the TODAY SHOW, they will give you a 10% discount on your first order – yippee!!!

You can also cover the naked cake with a rustic buttercream icing or an alternative icing to suit taste. These are simple but beautiful when accented with flowers and toppers.
